Since 1982, Sigma Delta Tau has been raising money and awareness for Prevent Child Abuse America (PCAA) so that no child is ever abused or neglected. PCAA works to deliver the great childhood that all children deserve by spreading awareness through all 50 states and developing programs of support and prevention. Our biggest initiative is Pinwheels for Prevention. Throughout the month of August, the sisters of SDT make, sell and display pinwheels to raise awareness for this cause.
Jewish Women International (JWI) is an organization dedicated to ensuring that all girls and women have the fundamental right to live in a safe home, thrive in healthy relationships and realize the full potential of their personal strength. In order to promote this message, the sisters of SDT sell their signature OPI nail polish, "Girls Achieve Grapeness" throughout the month of October (Domestic Violence Awareness Month). Our chapter is also very excited to be a part of JWI's "Book by Book Capital Campaign" in which the organization opens children's libraries in homeless and battered women's shelters. One of these libraries will be opening in DC soon and we are looking forward to regularly volunteering there!
Women for Women International is a philanthropy unique to our chapter. This organization dedicated to providing practical skills, knowledge and resources to women in war torn regions so she can create a better environment for herself, her family and her community. Every year we sponsor one woman to be brought through the Women for Women curriculum. We are able to write back and forth to our woman and see the impact of our sponsorship first-hand.
Every Fall, our chapter hosts a week-long philanthropy called "Sig Delt Soccer". This week is filled with profit-shares at restaurants, bake sales, penny wars, and our signature event, ΣΔΤ Your Way Through DC. ΣΔΤ Your Way Through DC is an all you can eat buffet open to the entire GW community with foods from local DC eateries as well as various raffle prizes. The week is finished off with a soccer tournament between participating fraternities on the mall. So far, we have raised over $6000 during our 2018 Sig Delt Soccer Slam!
Every Spring we hold a one-day philanthropy called "Sig Delt Sweetheart". This day consists of a profit-share, bake sale, penny wars, chicken nugget grams and concludes with a pageant in which participating fraternities are judged by a panel of GW administrators to be named "Sig Delt Sweetheart". At our 2018 Sig Delt Sweetheart Pageant we raised over $4000!
Once per month a group of our sisters volunteers at a local homeless shelter. As volunteers we help serve meals or help do prep work for future meals.
We also continue to help raise money for the Panhellenic and Inter Fraternal Greek communities through participating in their philanthropy weeks. Additionally, our chapter is devoted to participating in campus wide fundraisers such as Dance Marathon and Relay for Life. Further, our sisters continue to volunteer and contribute to our community through personal community service projects. Last semester, our sisters completed over 1,200 hours of community service!
This year we held our Second Annual CrΣΔΤe Community Week. This is a week long initiative to create a stronger sense of community within GW and within DC through community service and community engagement. From September 8-14, 2018 our sisters participated in the Susan G. Komen Race For the Cure DC, GW Remembers 9/11 event, DC School Supply Drive, Back to School Goodie Bag Making for GW Faculty and Staff and Miriam's Kitchen!
