Welcome to Sigma Delta Tau at the George Washington University! My name is Tara and I am incredibly fortunate to have been given the opportunity to be the President of the Alpha Tau chapter. This organization has given so much to me in my three years as a sister and I’m so lucky to be able to give back in this role and so proud to represent an amazing group of woman.
To say, being a part of Sigma Delta Tau has changed my life for the better, is an understatement. There are so many inspiring young women I wouldn’t have met had I not joined this organization. They say to always surround yourself with those you admire, those who will lift you up. By joining this sisterhood, that’s exactly what I’ve done and the effect of that decision will last throughout my life. It is wonderful to know that I am a part of such an amazing group of caring, intelligent, and confident young women. Our chapter is filled with campus leaders, successful students, and dedicated philanthropists. Sigma Delta Tau has become my second home, and the sisterhood, my second family; I have made lasting memories, and found my best friends.
Take a look at our website to learn about Sigma Delta Tau, our dedication to sisterhood, scholarship, philanthropy, diversity, history, and tradition, and more importantly our dedication to each other!
President of the Alpha Tau Chapter
At the 1982 National Convention, the convention body unanimously agreed to adopt Prevent Child Abuse America as Sigma Delta Tau’s National Philanthropy. Prevent Child Abuse America is a voluntary organization dedicated to the prevention of child abuse through citizen action.
Each Sigma Delta Tau chapter conducts an annual service project, educational program, or major fund raiser for the benefit of Prevent Child abuse America. Together, the SDT chapters contribute more than $100,000 each year to their National philanthropy.
SDT also supports Women for Women International which educates women in conflict zones so they can be financially independent. The Alpha Tau chapter sponsors a sister through Women for Women International so she can support herself and her family.
Sigma Delta Tau nationally supports JWI, which provides programming for women so that they can become more empowered. We have a special partnership with OPI to sell a nail polish called Girls Achieve Grapeness. All of the profits from Girls Achieve Grapeness fund programs that benefit women and girls.
The Alpha Tau chapter locally supports DC Family and Child Services by hosting school supply and clothing drives. Our chapter is dedicated to helping the community around us in Washington, D.C.

Congratulations on your acceptance and decision to attend The George Washington University! I honestly cannot imagine myself at any other university. There is so much to do and so much excitement in DC and I hope you take advantage of the city when we are here.
Going through formal recruitment will be the stepping stone to some of your best college memories. If you have not already, I urge you to register for formal recruitment. Joining SDT has opened so many doors for me and has provided me with an incredible family and a place to call home. Our chapter thrives of academic success, and we always have time to participate in social and philanthropic activities. There is always something exciting going on in SDT!
As a former freshman going through recruitment, I understand that the process may be intimidating or scary but the end result is one that will make your college experience so amazing and it will truly change your life.
The sisterhood that we have in SDT is incomparable to any other. Our chapter is full of girls with a variety of interests, hobbies and passions, but at the end of the day we are all sisters. I can honestly say that if I ever needed anything at all, I would feel comfortable calling any single girl in this chapter. Additionally, I know that if a sister was in need, I would drop everything for them.
If you have any questions at all about formal recruitment, SDT, life at GW, or sororities in general, please don’t hesitate to contact me! I am so excited to meet you during recruitment in the Spring!
